Sushi Scopes

By Lalia Wilson

Happy New Year! Let us celebrate making it through 2020, a heck of a year, and ready ourselves for more positive vibes in 2021. January will be a busy month with most governments moving forward with vaccinations and responses to the coronavirus. In the U.S. a new government of far different political philosophy will begin making major changes in public policy. All these things, plus the public's responses will seem like a surge forward after a year of delays and isolation. But the epidemic is not over. Plus, Mercury goes retrograde at the end of the month, on January 30th, until February 20th; Mercury is in the sign Aquarius the whole time. In addition to this being winter in the northern hemisphere, and possibly the peak of the coronavirus damage, there is some good in this coming Mercury retrograde—which we will discuss more next month!

This month we are using four different decks created by the team of Christine Aguiar and James Battersby and available at https://tarotcollectibles.com. For the Fire signs, we have the Groovy Waite (2019) deck. For the Earth signs, we have the Winter Waite deck (2018). For the Air signs, we have the Trippin’ Waite deck (2019) and for the water signs, we have the Black Light Tarot deck (2020). These decks are published in limited editions and may not be available for long. Note also, that the Black Light Tarot did not scan accurately as to color. This deck has ink that fluoresces under black light and appears "normal" under daylight. Using my scanner, neither occurred. Instead, the colors seem to have lost all the warm tones. Check their website for more accurate color renditions.

Good news this month! We had four repeated Major Arcana cards: The Empress, The Guru/Hierophant, The Wheel, and Temperance. These cards strongly underline our collective and interlocked destinies. They offer hope that we will meet the challenges of providing for all, healing, and moving forward in a moderate fashion.

I choose various decks to illustrate each month's drawings to show the versatility and variety of tarot, to emphasize a particular season or sign, and because some are my favorites.

Aries: The Fool and the Knight of Swords:

Dear Aries, do you feel surrounded by scientists and geeks? Especially this month you are drawn to intellectuals as friends. You have a beginner's mind as we move forward into 2021. Your finances may be quirky this month, as the world has not yet rebalanced from the covid economic catastrophe. Be flexible. Learn from smart people.

Taurus: Death and the Ten of Wands:

Taurus Winter Waite Tarot Jan 2021 20201219 0001

Dear Taurus, you are drawn to the intensity of your partner, as well as suffering from the heavy work and tragedy of 2020. Part of you sees nothing different coming, it's just working hard and face life's extremes. No wonder you are drawn to the enigmatic, and sexually magnetic Scorpio. Better times are coming by the time your birthday rolls around.

Gemini: The Empress and the Three of Swords:

Gemini

Dear Gemini, legal issues are grabbing your attention, or perhaps it is school or your religion. At any rate, you are putting most everything aside to deal with a major issue. At the same time, some intensity has come to your emotional life and you may be at odds with your partner. Divorce? Perhaps you work in the legal field or are attending school to learn how to facilitate divorces, instead of going through your own.

Cancer: Empress and Eight of Swords:

Cancer

Dear Cancer, things are getting intense with a partner, perhaps a sexual relationship has escalated "too much, too soon." Your normally gentle nature is caught up in something overwhelming. You feel as if you're being swept away. Is this something good for you? You have more power here than you think. Give yourself some time to find a perspective.

Leo: The Emperor and the Six of Cups:

Leo Groovy Waite Tarot Jan 2021 20201219 0002

Dear Leo, like many others this month you have your attention directed outwards, perhaps because the inner wounds are too fresh. You remember old times and good friends and regret not having them nearby. Find a way to access and express your feelings, as your ability to take part in the outer world depends upon doing some inner work.

Virgo: Wheel and the Six of Pentacles:

Virgo Winter Waite Tarot Jan 2021 20201219 0001

Dear Virgo, as you know, life changes. Sometimes you are the one on top, and sometimes you are the one begging for alms. Look at your current situation. If you are relatively well off, it is your turn to aid others. If not, accept what aid is available and avoid feelings of shame or inadequacy. The aid you receive is intended to help you along the way so that when the time comes, you can pay it forward.

Libra: The Wheel and the Six of Swords:

Libra

Dear Libra, similar to Virgo this month, you are either in a good position with regard to the wealth of mind, body, and substance, or you need assistance. If you need help, accept that. Some retreat to a safer location is indicated for you. Do what needs to be done.

Scorpio: Temperance and the Queen of Swords:

Scorpio Black Light Tarot Jan 2021 20201219 0001

Dear Scorpio, you need to handle your money carefully this month. Something big is happening around your home. Either you are benefiting from a Queen of Swords type, a direct no-nonsense person, possibly an attorney or judge, or someone like that is messing with you. Which side of this dispute do you want to be on? Choose wisely.

Sagittarius: The Guru/Hierophant and the Nine of Wands:

Sagittarius Groovy Waite Tarot Jan 2021 20201219 0001

Dear Sagittarius, it looks like you have been working hard, whether paid employment or not, and health issues may be a concern. You throw your whole self into all that you do, possibly ignoring self-care. This is a reminder to put on your own oxygen mask first. Possibly a child is working in a healthcare field. Do all you can to support him or her.

Capricorn: Temperance and the Five of Swords:

Capricorn Winter Waite Tarot Jan 2021 20201219 0001

Dear Capricorn, for years, you have carried a heavy burden. Things are now lightening up, though not yet "light-hearted." Are they ever for a Capricorn? Someone who always sees the downside to every change? However… you have learned a lot over these years. Your memories of how you survived and the lessons you learned will aid you for the rest of your life. In the meantime, this month, look for moderation, listen to your dreams. Don't get in the middle of anyone else's quarrels. People around you will be fighting about money issues. Your best strategy is to stay out of it.

Aquarius: The Lovers and the Four of Wands:

Aquarius

Dear Aquarius, as the least romantic sign of the zodiac, you have an unusually good month, and good year, coming up.  Just about everything you want is right there for you: respect, intellect, communication, strategic thinking, and comfort. While you should always read contracts carefully before signing them, this month brings positive contracts to you in all areas of your life. And finally, weddings! Whether your own or those of others, weddings and other public ceremonies are highlights of the month.

Pisces: The Guru/Hierophant and the Seven of Pentacles:

Dear Pisces, you have gone through a long period of being able to comprehend the inner mysteries behind the public ceremonies of religion. More enlightenment is coming, should you continue exploring this path. Religious doctrine always hints at an inner truth, even if the outer practice is outdated and unnecessary. Be patient. Also, drugs and alcohol are not a shortcut to enlightenment. Instead, they will work against your goals; abstain!

You can use these Tarot Scopes to read your Sun sign, Moon sign, or Rising Sign (also called your Ascendant). You can determine these by using free or low-cost apps, or internet sites, and inputting your time, date, and place of birth. The Rising sign indicates your entire life; the Sun sign is about your ego and creative forces, and the Moon sign is about your reigning needs, emotions, and flexibility.

The tarot cards used as illustrations for this column are ones that I or the editor, Terri Clement, admire and want to share with you. Note that decks have subtle differences of meaning as they are reinterpreted by a new creator/artist, and, of course, the tarot reader. Enjoy that flexibility of meaning, and the artwork of these various decks. Reading articles with illustrations like these will help you determine the tarot decks that most fit you. If you get bored seeing my favorites, I’m open to suggestions and gifts.
